“I'm safe. I have a warm bed to sleep in. I've been able to rebuild my family relationships.”
“During my time at HOC, I've accomplished many things. I've got all my vital documentation, applied for disability, finished supervised probation, accomplished therapy, and medication goals. I've attended three retreats in Florida. I went to Colorado and to Jesus Jam. I've attended many different classes.
My life today takes place in a nurturing environment. I'm safe. I have a warm bed to sleep in. I've been able to rebuild my family relationships. After being homeless and exploited, it's taken me a long time to feel “normal”. To not feel shame about just existing. I still have a hard time sometimes. At my lowest moments, I didn't even feel human anymore. I've come a long way from a little lost girl in the woods.
Some things I find joy in are my kids and my family. I love being able to reconnect with them. My mom and I have always had a rocky relationship but we are growing closer. I have two sons, ages 19 and 24. We're also working on our relationships. I also find joy in getting closer to God. He makes me feel safe and loved. He helps me love myself a little more each day.
My plan after leaving HOC is to start making some kind of income either through disability or working. I look forward to the chance to reconnect with myself even more and learn more about myself.
A piece of advice I have for future HOC residents is to take time to figure out what they want and to be vocal about it. To focus on themselves and their process and not worry about what everyone else is doing. Trust the process and give it time.”
